Buy Fluorescent Lamps Online

Light is one of the most important aspects of our lives. From having illumination to work by, read by or simply relax with the right light source is vital to your productivity. There are a wide range of lighting choices currently available on the market from designer fixtures to industrial lighting products.

Besides fixtures there are literally hundreds of choices when it comes to bulbs and lamps. Among the wide assortment of choices fluorescent lamps have become increasingly popular in today's society. From industrial style lamps which use fluorescent tubes and ballasts (the long rectangular boxes which house fluorescent bulbs) to compact fluorescent bulbs (also known as CFL's) that are generally used by the average consumer. General Electric (GE), Sylvania, Wescot and Maxlite are among the major manufactures of fluorescent lighting for both residential and commercial use. Technology has improved greatly over the past few years making fluorescent lights easy and more enticing to use. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs which pass electricity through a thin metal wire (known as the filament) causing the wire to heat and glow from the energy being passed through it fluorescent bulbs work in a far different manner.

Fluorescent lights consist of several parts that work together. The fluorescent tube is filled with mercury vapor and is attached to an electronic device called a ballast. The ballast is located on both ends of the tube and produces electricity which is passed through the mercury vapor. When electricity is passed through the vapor the mercury reacts to the presence of electricity and begins to emit ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet light collides with a special coating made from a phosphorus compound that lines the inside of the fluorescent tube. When the phosphorus compound is excited by the ultraviolet rays it reacts to the light producing visible light as ultraviolet light is not seen by the human eye. Because only a small amount of electricity is needed to excite the mercury vapor fluorescent bulbs require far less energy than incandescent bulbs do which produce light through energy released in the form of heat. Fluorescent bulbs to not get as hot as incandescent bulbs do and therefore can be a safe alternative form of light especially for those concerned with the risk of burn (such as parents with small children).
